Deep Seek- and the Spiritual and Moral Problem of AI
For many, AI is the next Apple- or the best way to grow rich.
Bill Gates once said, "If you invent a breakthrough in artificial intelligence so machines can learn, that is worth 10 Microsofts." It is true.
AI has the potential to make human beings more comfortable than ever. Since we tend to almost worship our own comfort, we will give our offerings to what will make us more comfortable- AI. Billions will pour into the company(ies) that will lead in this industry.
On another front, military experts point out that whoever gets to "singularity" first- that is when AI surpasses humans in strategy, thinking, and the ability for tactical planning, then all the other technologies become secondary. How big your gun is, how fast or invisible your plane is, how powerful your ship is will not matter if you have a machine that can outsmart you every time.
A week ago billions were lost to Invidia stock because Deepseek (the Chinese version) claimed to have caught up without all the billions in research. A week later we are beginning to see they may have just copied software (illegally). If that is so, then we don't need to fear quite as much.
Scientists frankly disagree when AI Singularity will happen. One said 2031 (7 years), some 2045 and some 2060. Ben Goertzel, CEO of SingularityNET told Decrypt that AI Singularity (when AI no longer needs or is under human control) is 3-8 years away. Or at least Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) is 3-8 years away.
So what happens when a machine becomes more powerful than humans, and no longer needs humans to run it? You might think back to the SciFi movie, "2001 a Space Odyssey." In that movie the friendly Hal became the killer Hal because the machine thought the humans would turn it off. Of course, such fears could be a kind of paranoia- for machines maybe don't have a survival instinct programmed in.
I believe there is more to life than programming or machines. There is a "ghost in the machine" that we cannot see or understand. God is at work through our work. In the end, it is not a machine in charge but a loving God.
If there is a God, then morals that He gives are more valuable than money. Pleasing Him is more important that anything. So cheeting and stealing intelligence to get ahead is not the highest value.
Prayer: Lord, keep my moral fiber strong even in the temptation to think about money and power.
